A cooking course could be an ideal way for a group of friends to get out and do something together. At the same time, most of us could probably use a few cooking lessons, no matter how long we have been doing it. There are so many cooking styles, Italian cooking, French cooking, Asian cooking or my favorite Vegetarian cooking.
I don’t know about you, but when I think of French cuisine, I think about Ms. Julia Childs. I believe she was on the television showing people how to utilize French cooking techniques when I was quite young. Another one of my favorites was the Frugal Gourmet on PBS, many years ago. I have every one of his books, I read them, but I don’t know if I actually used more than a couple of recipes. Or there is Emeril, what more needs to be said. Imagine, if by some chance, your instructor was one of these waiting to be discovered. Do you think you would learn and use the techniques and recipes if one of the above was your teacher and you could interact with them.
But no matter what, if you were doing this with a group of your friends, I am sure you would be having a good time. Then after class you could go out and discuss what you learned or not. Just make sure the cooking course you take, though somewhat serious, would lend itself to making an enjoyable evening once or twice a week. If the instructor hits you as being a wet blanket, best to quit and see about a refund the first night.
There are a lot of things you could learn in a cooking course, like how to make 30 minute meals or, if you are into this sort of stuff, how to make the perfect white sauce. In my case, since I now cook only for me, none of my meals take longer than 15 minutes, max. And white sauce has not passed my lips in 20 years, being somewhat of a semi-health nut.
There is a class I would like to take someday, on how to make items for a totally raw diet. Even though this hardly qualifies as cooking, considering there is no heat or cooking of food involved. It could be called a combining class not a cooking course. And unfortunately, none of my friends would be interested in taking that no cooking course.
But if you have friends with similar tastes, then taking a course like this would be a great way to improve the quality of your family’s meals and provide you and your friends with a night to get away from it all.
